The GC-MS consists of a 5973C single-quadrupole mass spectrometer coupled with a 7890B gas chromatograph (Agilent). The mass spectrometer can be operated in EI mode using helium as a carrier gas. The gas chromatograph has a flame ionization detector and is equipped with a 2-way splitter based on capillary flow technology, which allows splitting column effluent between FID and MS detectors. The GC-MS system is equipped with a CTC PAL autosampler which has liquid, static headspace, and SPME sampling options.
The instrument can be used for targeted and non-targeted quantitative or qualitative analysis of volatile and semivolatile organic compounds.
Available software: MassHunter.
The GC-MD&FID analysis of gases generated by rumen fluid. Methane can be hardly detected by the MS detector however clear signal is observed in the GC-FID chromatogram whereas this detector is "blind" to air and carbon dioxide.
